This sacred icon of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child is inspired by a remarkable 13th-century Syriac manuscript preserved in the Vatican Library (Syr. 559). Produced around the year 1220 in the Jazira region near Mosul, likely at the monastery of Deir Mar Mattai, the manuscript is an illuminated evangeliary containing the Peshitta—the Syriac translation of the Holy Gospels—and stands among the most important surviving examples of Middle Eastern Christian art.

The image follows the Hodegetria iconographic tradition—Greek for “She Who Shows the Way.” The Virgin Mary gestures toward Christ with her right hand, directing the faithful to her Son as the true path to salvation. The Christ Child, enthroned upon her arm, blesses the viewer, affirming His divine authority and mercy. Rich colors, architectural framing, and the luminous gold background reflect the visual language of Syriac Christian manuscripts, where theology, scripture, and art are inseparably united.
Printed on sustainably sourced birch wood, this plaque brings the warmth and texture of natural grain into dialogue with ancient sacred art. Each piece has a distinctive character, with the wood’s subtle variations enhancing the icon’s timeless presence. The matte finish reduces glare, making it ideal for prayer corners, chapels, or contemplative spaces.
