Properly speaking, this design is one found in Eastern Christianity, especially Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox practices, densely packed with symbolism, all tied to the Passion of Jesus Christ, the climax of the trials and tribulations that Christ faced at the end of his earthly life that led up to the Resurrection.
