Saint Charbel Makhlouf is one of the most beloved figures of devotion in both his native Lebanon and in Mexico. He was a humble monk who lived a simple life of prayer during the 19th century in a monastery in the mountains towering over the blue Mediterranean north of Beirut. Following his death, prayers for his intercession with God often were answered with miracles. Pope Paul VI canonized him in 1975. The large Lebanese disaspora community brought Charbel's devotion to Mexico, where he has become one of the most popular saints. It seems hard to find a Mexican Catholic church without a shrine to St. Charbel.
