Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker, Bishop of Tremithus (commemorated December 12), was a humble Cypriot shepherd of the late third–early fourth century who, after his wife’s death, became a bishop while preserving a simple life of charity and prayer; endowed by God with the gift of miracles, he healed the sick, cast out demons, raised the dead, calmed the elements, and cared tenderly for the poor, participated in the First Ecumenical Council (325) where he defended the Orthodox faith against Arianism with plain but Spirit-filled words and famously illustrated the Holy Trinity with a brick, and after a life marked by hospitality, humility, and divine power, peacefully reposed in the Lord, with his relics now venerated on the island of Corfu.
