Devotional & Theological Significance
Originating from the 14th-century Zograf Monastery on Mount Athos, the icon of the Mother of God "Uslyshitelnitsa" depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, who extends His hand in blessing. The sacred name "Uslyshitelnitsa" ("The Hearer") stems from a miracle granted to Saint Cosmas of Athos. As Cosmas prayed before this image seeking the path to salvation, the Mother of God directly interceded, asking her Son to guide him, to which Christ audibly responded with instruction. Theologically, this icon serves as a profound monument to the Virgin Mary’s maternal care and swift intercession. It reminds believers that the Mother of God continually hears sincere prayers and presents them directly to her divine Son, serving as a beacon of comfort, hope, and heavenly guidance.
